Brisbane tower duo to feature ‘landscaped exoskeleton’

Brisbane tower duo to feature ‘landscaped exoskeleton’

29 July, 2022

An updated development application has been submitted for a pair of buildings on Montague Road in Brisbane’s West End.

The proposal includes the development of two towers, 19 and 17 storeys respectively, and the creation of a public amphitheatre along the Davies Park side of the site.

This submission is a significant reduction to the original proposal from 2020, which was previously approved to accommodate five buildings on the site.

Brisbane architects NRA Collaborative (formerly Noel Robinson Architects) said the revised design was intended to rethink the open space and provide more ground plane opportunities for the West End community.

“The revised design will deliver a vibrant activated public plaza and subtropical landscaped space for the benefit of the local community,” the architect said.

The facade will feature a distinctive north-east facing curved vertical garden that will operate as a sunshade wrapping around the buildings. The landscaped exoskeleton will act as a biophilic filter to provide natural cross-ventilation to the open walkways to the apartments.

The new design will also incorporate cross-site links, forming pedestrian and cycle paths from Vulture Street, to ease pedestrian flow between one of Brisbane’s major thoroughfares through to the Brisbane River walkway.

Despite a significant reduction in the footprint of the development, the twin buildings will still host nearly 350 apartments.
