RACQ reveals thieves hit Brisbane's 4109 postcode hardest

Brisbane's southern suburbs have the worst home theft rate in the Brisbane region, an RACQ report has found.

RACQ have released their 2016 list for worst suburbs for home theft and found Macgregor, Robertson, Sunnybank and Sunnybank Hills were hit more than any other suburb.

The report found forcing doors and windows open were still the most common forms of breaking into a home.

The report found entry through open or unlocked doors was on the rise at 17.2 per cent.

RACQ executive manager insurance communications Mike Spokinski said most break and enters were largely "sneak raids", where a thief enters a property while people are home.

"We are reminding householders that the majority of theft is in fact opportunistic and what we are seeing over the past couple of years is a steady increase in the number of home intrusions or sneak raids," he said.

"Home intrusion is the main method of entry. We are seeing doors kicked in, windows forced open and even thieves entering through open and unlocked doors."

Mr Spokinski asked homeowners to take a minute to think about their home security after research found 36.9 per cent of break-ins were opportunistic.

"Be aware, brazen and cunning thieves are now prepared to enter homes that are occupied, be alert to this fact," he said.

"Just remember the simple basics, if you have door locks, use them, if you have deadlocks use them, activate window locks and if you have an alarm system, remember to activate it."
