Cloudy Pool Water Tips
A swimming pool can go cloudy for many reasons. But here are a few quick checks for you:
- Is your pool running long enough? (Should be running around 8 hours per day in summer)
- Is there enough Chlorine in your pool? (Minimum 2-3PPM)
- Is there enough Stabiliser or Sunscreen in your pool? It protects chlorine (Recommend around 30-50PPM)
- Is the Cartridge Filter dirty of clogged up? (Clean and recheck)
- Is the Sand Filter or Media Filter requiring backwashing? or does the Media need replacing? (Every 5-7 Years)
The Pool Sand Filter or Media Filter is a real workhorse in filtering out all the fine particles , dust and debris that keeps your pool sparkling. Let’s discuss below a little more about Filters.
Problems with your Pool Filtration?
Are you having problems with your pool water being regularly cloudy or, after backwashing & rinsing the filter, that fine dust or dirt returns to you pool? There’s only so much the filter can hold or it will need to be cleaned; it may even be time to think about changing the filter media (e.g., sand, zeolite, or glass).
Changing a Pool Filter of Sand Filter Media
We recommend that pool owners change the media in their filters every 5-7 years. The role of the filter is to trap fine particles between the grains of sand or glass. Even with backwashing & rinsing on a regular basis, dirt, oils and calcium buildup can become trapped through the media in the filter, sometimes collecting a packed layer of debris on top of the media itself. The other thing that happens is the media can become “rounded” so as to not trap as much of the finer debris, which means small particulate returns to the swimming pool.
Pool Sand Filter Treatments
There are some chemical pool filter treatments which work in the short term to clean the filter but often replacing the sand filter media is the more effective solution. Charges for this usually start at around $350 depending on the size of the filter, age and the type of replacement
Replace Filter Media or Replace entire Media Filter
Chlorine from the pool water over the years can make parts in the filter brittle. If the filter is old and there are also leaks around the filter or to the waste line (leaking spider gasket), then you should consider whether it is a better option to replace the entire filter and media at the same time. Then everything is new and you have new warranty, often up to 10 years on the tanks. Complete Sand Filter replacements, with new multipart valve, media and labour/plumbing can start from around $1100 up to $1800 for larger filters, but get a free quote and discuss your options.
